What is Dementia Care?

Dementia care is a type of tailored support for people living with dementia who can no longer manage safely at home. It combines practical help with daily tasks, such as washing, dressing and taking medication, with careful attention to communication and routine. Staff use approaches that are calm and consistent, which can ease distress and make day-to-day life feel more manageable.

The care we provide is holistically designed around each resident. We recognise that everyone experiences dementia differently and adapt our support accordingly. We also work closely with our residents’ loved ones to ensure they are supported and continue to make memories with residents during their journey with us.

We work closely with families before residents move in to gather information about their life story, interests, preferred routines and any worries they may have. On arrival, we keep changes to a minimum, introduce staff gradually and use familiar belongings and favourite music or activities to create a sense of continuity. Our team offers calm, patient support, allowing plenty of time for the resident to get used to their new surroundings at their own pace.

At Lighthouse Lodge Care Home, we provide a wellbeing programme for all, which includes both group and 1:1 activities and therapies. For example, we regularly hold arts & crafts sessions, music therapy, reminiscence activities, and more. Activities and therapies are designed to help stimulate the physical, cognitive, and social well-being of our residents, including those with dementia.
