When A-Z Safari visited Lighthouse Lodge Care Home, it was turned into a vibrant, sensory-rich safari experience where residents could get up close and personal with a variety of animals. Excitement, interest, and lots of smiles had been created throughout the home by the activity.

Up Close with Nature

The A-Z Safari team brought in a range of animals for residents to gently interact with, providing a fun and safe way to experience being in close contact with wildlife. The visit produced an experience that promoted engagement and enjoyment, from gentle textures to organic movements and sounds.

Throughout the day, the animals took centre stage, encouraging residents and staff to talk, laugh, and share their experiences. While some residents were able to interact with the animals in ways that matched their comfort and preferences, others just liked to watch and listen.

The Power of Sensory Engagement

For individuals with differences of conditions, such as dementia, anxiety, and limited mobility, animal-assisted and sensory-based activities like these provide numerous advantages. Engaging with animals can enhance mood, lower stress levels, and improve communication and memory.

Additionally, by promoting sensory stimulation through touch, sight, and sound, these experiences help residents in maintaining a calm and meaningful level of engagement with their environment. On top of this, it can boost emotional well-being and connection for individuals by evoking pleasant memories of animals, the outdoors, or previous experiences.

At Lighthouse Lodge, fostering moments that promote mental and physical health continues to be a major priority in everyday activities.
